Workstream Activities
Overcoming Barriers to Access in the Developing World
The American Pharmaceutical Group (APG) Workstream includes a number of activities aimed at overcoming barriers to healthcare access in the developing world.
Healthcare Capacity
Existing therapies for high-prevalence diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, cannot be provided safely without comprehensive care programmes. These support the monitoring of disease progression, ensure high levels of patient compliance with prescribed therapies, guard against the potential development of drug resistance and effectively treat opportunistic infections.

Research and Development
The APG remains committed to maximising global healthcare capacity through the development of new medicines, as well as more easily administered new formulations of existing drugs. Members of the APG believe that enhancing the access to essential drugs is their primary role.
Partnerships
Public-private partnerships are vital instruments in the battle against HIV. The APG calls on governments, non-governmental organisations, communities and other private sector groups to join partnerships, specifically aimed at enhancing access to medicines in the developing world.
Donation Programmes
Members of the APG contribute to a large number of corporate social responsibility programmes, which ensure more people receive the medicines they need.

Education/awareness
Information, education and communication (behaviour change programmes) are key requirements for successful prevention and treatment programmes. Members of the APG recognise that true access also requires patients to understand their treatment and treatment options.
